What Is Hemp?
Hemp refers to varieties of the plant species Cannabis sativa that are legally defined (in the U.S.) as containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. In the United States, hemp was federally legalized under the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (commonly called the 2018 Farm Bill), which removed hemp from the list of controlled substances and allowed it to be cultivated under regulated programs. Hemp has been used for thousands of years for fiber (textiles, rope, paper), food (hemp seeds, hemp oil), industrial materials (bioplastics, building materials), and its naturally occurring plant compounds called cannabinoids.
What Is THCA?
THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in raw hemp and cannabis plants. Hemp plants can produce THCA while still remaining compliant with federal hemp definitions, provided the delta-9 THC concentration stays within legal limits on a dry-weight basis. THCA is the raw form found in the plant, while THC is what you feel after heat is applied through smoking, vaping, or dabbing.
General Benefits Associated with Hemp-Derived THCA
Research into cannabinoids is ongoing, and while studies are still developing, consumers and researchers are interested in THCA for several potential properties. The following reflects areas of ongoing research and consumer interest and is not a medical claim:
- Pain management — may help with chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and inflammation-related discomfort
- Anti-inflammatory properties under study
- Nausea and vomiting relief (THC-based medications are FDA-approved for chemotherapy-related nausea)
- Appetite stimulation
- Muscle spasticity reduction
- Sleep support
- Anxiety and stress relief (dose-dependent)
- Neuroprotective potential (under study)
- Palliative care support
